Douglas (Doug) Wayne Wetherup

1962 - 2025

Douglas (Doug) Wayne Wetherup passed away unexpectedly on the night of December 23rd, 2025 at the age of 63, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Doug was born in 1962 in Toronto, and grew up in the London and Komoka area of Ontario, where he fell in love with playing the guitar, the blues, and big trucks.

As a little boy he told his mother he’d be a truck driver for a living as he had a picture of a Mack truck on his wall. In 1981, when his parents had moved to Crowsnest Pass, AB, he and his younger brother Scott, hitchhiked across the country to join them, finding his love for the freedom of the road. There he met the third love of his life, and most important, Diane Campbell, and was blessed with their daughter Britany in 1987.

They lived across Southern Alberta but were often drawn back to the Crowsnest Pass area where most of their immediate family lived. Tragically his wife Diane would pass in a car crash in 1994. Doug found his solace on the road as a truck driver, in playing music, and raising his daughter.

He eventually moved further north to Grande Cache, AB for work, where he became a veteran trucker with decades of experience driving across Western and Northern Canada. It was in Grande Cache that his beloved son, David, would be born in 2011, making it his base of operations so that he could be closer to him. Doug proudly became a grandfather to Graeson in 2024, whom he often visited on Vancouver Island, though their primary form of communication was growling to each other over the phone almost daily.

Doug was known for his boisterous and crass sense of humour that could make even the most serious person crack a smile. His humour had a way of lightening the mood even in the most somber of circumstances. He had a great passion and love for music. Self taught how to play the guitar in his early teens, he was never far from one and at one point owned nearly 30. You could always be sure to find a jam session at his house with his life long friend Brendan. He also loved motorcycles, especially Harley Davidsons, which he was so proud of each time he owned one during his life. Doug was an avid gardener, and an excellent cook & baker, things he learned from his mom Georgina.

Doug is predeceased by his mother Georgina Oliver (nee Frank), step-father Dave Oliver, and wife Diane Wetherup (nee Campbell). He is survived by his daughter Britany Hurley (nee Wetherup) and grandson Graeson, son David Wetherup, and brother Scott Wetherup, his nieces Rene Roufosse, Amber Wetherup, Mystery Wetherup, his nephew Sebastian Wetherup and numerous nephews and nieces on the Campbell side of the family.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Doug’s adopted home town of the Crowsnest Pass, AB, this summer. For information about the gathering, or to send in a memory or submission, please contact his son-in-law, Graeme Hurley, gmhurley91@gmail.com.

Anyone wishing to help out his teenage son David, as the family deals with losing their primary source of income, can reach out to his son-in-law Graeme Hurley, gmhurley91@gmail.com, for a way to assist the family.
