James Robert Bain

April 25, 1946 - November 2, 2025

James (Jamie) passed away on November 2, 2025, at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, at age 79. His memory lives on in the hearts of his wife Megan, sister Peggy (Arndt), brother Peter (Leigh), sister-in-law Janet, nieces, nephews, extended family in Ontario and Alberta, and treasured friends.

Jamie was the eldest son of the late James and Madeleine Bain and predeceased by his brother Alex. He was born in Toronto, where he attended Whitney Public School and Upper Canada College. Memorable summers were spent at the family cottage on Lake of Bays and at Camp Hurontario. Jamie began his professional career as a chartered accountant in 1970. His work took him to Edmonton in 1980. In 1986 he and Megan married and established Edmonton as home. Jamie practiced in the areas of tax and estate planning (CA, CFP) until his retirement.

Jamie was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada. He volunteered his time and expertise in many capacities to the church, and community organizations. He had a broad range of interests and hobbies, and a deep knowledge of many topics – history, geography, English, astronomy, theology, physics, chemistry, biology, chronometry, literature, classical music are but a few. He lived a life of stewardship, guided by a keen intellect, well-considered judgement, respect for others, and exacting standards for his personal and professional conduct. Jamie’s good manners, concern for others, ready smile and hearty laugh lasted his lifetime. He faced his advancing heart failure and increasing frailty with quiet courage and grace; a gentle, gentleman to the end.

We are grateful for the compassionate ministry of Reverend Valerie Oden, and the visits of support by friends, relatives, members of Riverbend United Church, and his special visitor, Taiwo. We are also grateful for the care provided by the Mazankowski Heart Function Clinic and the University of Alberta Hospital.

Family and friends are invited to a service to celebrate Jamie’s life at Riverbend United Church (14907– 45 Ave, NW, Edmonton) at 2 pm on November 29th.
