David Matheson

October 25, 1949 - December 2, 2025

David (Dave) Matheson, husband, father and grandfather, passed away on December 2, 2025 at the age of 76 with his family at his side.

Dave was known for his work ethic, sense of humor, and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed one.  He approached life with a no-nonsense attitude and a need to “get things done”.  His presence bound his family together, keeping them grounded and reminding them of their roots.  Friends and neighbours were always welcomed, and he was sure to have a Pilsner and story to share.

Born on October 25, 1949 in the Old Manning Hospital, Dave spent his childhood growing up on the family homestead east of Manning.  He was the eldest of four children born to Willard and Eva.  He spent his early years learning how to work the farm, caring for his siblings and animals and even knitting his own socks.

Dave married Mary Anne in 1970 and they began their family.  They were proud parents to Kim, Tyra, and Travis. Although many winters were spent working away from home, he instilled the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of family in his children.

Early in his marriage, Dave spent time working his skidder at logging camps and then alongside his brother-in-law on rigs.   After purchasing his truck, Dave began working in the oilfield.  For many winters his home base was Jackson’s camp up north where he met many valued friends.  The stories of adventures, working in extreme temperatures, and driving in less than ideal conditions are plentiful.  He was a skilled operator who was known for always taking the time to help out where he could, including mentoring younger drivers who were just starting out.  In addition to working the farm in the summer, Dave joined the local gravel and water haulers, maintaining county roads.

Dave was a farmer at heart and working the land was his calling.  He had names for all his livestock and most often the animals would follow him around as he did the chores.  He was quick to instill in his family that caring for the animals came first. Spring and fall were his favorite seasons.  He would plan well in advance what seed should go in the ground, the spray schedule and how to best tend to his crops.  He and Mary Anne made countless trips to check the germination, leaf stage and test grain.  Some of his most favorite places were sitting in the swather or combine.  He was so happy that he was able to complete his harvest this fall. Up until his passing, he was planning what needed to be planted next spring and if he could clear a few more acres.

If there was anything that Dave loved more than farming, it was his grandchildren.  He took the time to share what he knew, answered endless questions, and was their biggest fan and supporter.  Grandpa was the one they came to when they needed advice, to share their frustrations or just to know that there was someone in their corner.  No grandchild ever left without a hug, an “I love you”, and a full tank of gas.

Dave is lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Mary Anne, daughters Kim (John), Tyra, and daughter-in-law Sheri (Nick), his grandchildren Corey, Kiana, Bleyd, Emily, Mats, Tiana, Taryn and Jack, great-grandson Carter, sister Wendy Hemingson, his best friend and brother, Ron Matheson, and his four-legged companion, Ole.

Dave was predeceased by his son, Travis, his parents, Willard and Eva, grandson Brady, sister Joyce, nephews Dane, Gregg and Carter and niece, Annie.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held in the summer of 2026.

If family and friends desire, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to Manning Strays and Adoptables.
